Blue is green—but we can all agree it’s summer

Taking time to reflect

Happy summer everybody! I’m in the middle of two whole weeks off, which almost never happens. I’ve spent it with a mini vacation to Washington, D.C. with Ethel to fact check the color of the Reflecting Pool…

It’s a pretty color, but not the right color.

…and a ton of museums—we nerd out much better when not catering to the needs of offspring who inexplicably don’t want to read EVERY SINGLE PLACARD…

The Oculus at the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Incredible museum!

…and lots of World Cup watching; haven’t attended actual games in Boston, but made it to Fan Fest where I met two fine members of the Tartan Army, and they just happened to be Scottish doctors! We compared notes about medicine (verdict: it’s messed up there, but super messed up here)…

I’m red, they are salmon

…and went to a book reading/music jam (Earfull: the performance series where writers feel cool and musicians feel smart! I highly recommend.) where I got to say hi to my college creative writing teacher, the now very famous Tom Perrotta (The Leftovers, Election, Little Children). No, I didn’t tell him about my comic books, yet…

He gave me an A-, if I recall.

…while tomorrow I’m heading with a bunch of old men to watch even older men (Wilco et al) play music all weekend at Solid Sound; it’s the only music festival I can handle because I can seek refuge inside the stupendous (and air conditioned) Mass MoCA…

Hiding from the crowd the last time I was at Solid Sound

…and of course

Comics comics comics!

Check out where we are on this project:
  • By The Time I Get To Dallas 5 and Trinity Project 5: DONE
  • Line art on By the Time I Get to Dallas 6 and Trinity Project 6: DONE, minus one panel and two covers.
  • Colors on Trinity Project 6: DONE
  • Inks and colors on Dallas 6: well underway.

Big next steps are finalizing the lettering scripts on both book sixes—the final moment when I must commit to every word I’ve written since 2013. I can do it! And building some hype for the Kickstarter launch in September. Please follow us so we can make it awesome!

By the Time I Get to Dallas #6 coming soon! Pencils Ben Worrell, Inks Chis Arieswendha, Colors Thaissa Diaz.

Another big development I’m excited to announce: the Dallas 5 variant cover will be drawn by my friend Peter Taylor, artist/creator of Pioneers: Blood and Stars!

The moment I saw this stunning book on Kickstarter I wanted him on my project somehow. I’m glad I found a spot for him before it’s all done. He’s drawing a doublesplash variant so we get more great art. Here is a sneak peek!

Ok, that’s what’s up. Enjoy your summer and remember, leave pool maintenance to the professionals.

Colin

Thankfully this portrait by Kehinde Wiley is still up at the National Portrait Gallery. These blues and greens are excellent, and on purpose!
